Motherhood in Color is an opportunity to talk about mothering in color in the United States in 2016.
Over the past 8 years we have experienced a renewed and deep sense of fear in our social consciousness, that the ugliness of our past is catching up with us.
Social media has provided us with intimate view of social truths we would like to conveniently forget particularly when it comes to discrimination and police brutality. Hate groups are on the rise fueled by fear and fear mongers and we are left shaken, traumatized and angered by the daily images that bombard us.
It is in that context that motherhood for women of color or women raising children of color comes to light. We only see the mothering of children of color and the mothers at the intersection of a brutal criminal justice system and police brutality. The lights shine brightly on these women when their sons and daughters are victims of brutality and hate, then soon enough we forget and move on while they are left to pick up the pieces, trying to find a new meaning and purpose to their loss.
What if we shined the light when there was no sensationalism, when the world was looking elsewhere for an immediate source of entertainment, what if we shined the light to show our society what it means to be a mother of color, our joy and angst, our hopes and dreams. We are no different than other mothers in this society and yet we are so different.
